Resolved Question: Too many Pond Snails? what should I do?
I have a one gallon "self sustaining" fish tank with 2 guppies and some plants. I also have a mystery snail, and I started off with two pond snails hoping to keep the algae down. My tank is doing very well, and the snails are keeping the algae down very well. My only concern is that my pond snails are reproducing like crazy!!! I knew this would happen when I got them, I just didn't think about what I was going to do about it. I already have 2 adult pond snails and about 20 babies. I have three more clutches of eggs I have found that will be hatching soon. Eventually I am going to have too many snails for my little tank, and I don't know what to do with them. I don't want to put them outside because I know that you shouldn't introduce new species into a foreign community (it will upset the ecology of the area). Any advice on what to do with all of my snails? Also, does anyone have any advice on how I can NATURALLY cycle the waste at the bottom of my tank? A few friends have told me to get a catfish but I'm not sure about this.
Resolved Question: Can these fish live together?
Can the bottom fish live together without killing each other? Guppy [Starting size: 1 cms. Full grown: 4 cms] (I am only buying these guys so that all the other fish can eat them instead of eating each other) Musk Turtle [Starting size: 10 cms. Full grown: 15 cms] (They wont bite the other larger fish because the Guppies are there) Orfe [Starting size: Probably around 15 cms. Full size: 70 cms] (These guys are schooling fish, I doubt if they are fully grown they can fit in the Silver Arowana's mouth, they wont fit in the Arowana's mouth as a baby either because the Arowana's will be babies as well) Koi [Starting size: 10 cms. Full grown: 1 meter] (The same goes with these guys as the Orfe] Silver Arowana [Starting size: Not sure probably around 5 cms. Full Grown: 120 cms] (I doubt Silvers eat Turtles as they have shells) Thanks for the help, also what other fish do you recommend to live with these guys? This is what the pond will be like: It will have no concrete or anything, it will just have a liner and rocks covering the bottom. There will also be two levels, one that is 1.2 meters and at the deep end it will be 2.4 meters and one that is 40 centimeters and 60 centimeters on the deep end, the shallow level will of course be on the outsides, this will also help people that have fallen in climb out (I have a dog but no children under 14) . There will be soft rocks in all levels, the rocks will be small (not gravel small), but still small. In the rocks will be potted plants, the top of the plants will be covered by rocks so the Koi dont uproot it. There will be a lot more plants on the deep end. There will also be a cave on the deep end, which will be 1x1x1, which means the deepest point in the pond will be 3.4 meters. On the outside of the pond there will be beautiful bricks, 3 stacked on top of each other, this goes all the way around the pond. Between the first brick and the second brick there will be a gap, this gap will let all the over flowing water come out from the sides and go into the garden. The pond will be square and be 6.2x6.7 meters. There will also be a water fall on the deep end of the pond, the middle of the water fall will be at the corner of the deep end, it will expand to the sides of the deep end, going towards the other two corners of the pond, but it wont go all the way, as you can tell the water fall will be quite large, about 6 meters long and in a < shape. On all parts of the water fall there will be water falling, there will be a stream carrying the water fall down and letting it into the pond from all the areas. So that is all, thanks for the help in advance :) Also I will probably get Silver Arowana later as they are very expensive, I dont have enough money to buy every single fish I need and make the pond, that is why I will buy them a little later. I will probably buy just one. Also I am not getting guppies any more, instead I am getting White Cloud Mountain Minnow, these guys dont have the colorful male and the ugly female. Instead they have beautiful male and female rather than one type that is ugly and one type that is beautiful. And they are also 3 cms for male and female. The biggest reason I bought them is because they are schooling fish, there is nothing more beautiful than a huge group of fish swimming in perfect lines. And it also makes them more visible while it is impossible to spot a guppy in such a large pond. Wait I haven't bought them yet. That is a grammar mistake, my bad :)
Resolved Question: What would be the best way to divide my fish communities out?
Listed as they are now... 1.5 gal {birthing tank} preg.. snow white platy 10 gal {nusery} "all babys" 60 guppys, 5 platys, 2 mollys, 100's apple snails 1 cat pleco 5 gal 1 figure 8 puffer & small leporad pleco, apple snails "for food purpose's" 40 gal 1 baby face moor, 6 guppy's, 5 molly's, apple snails 60 gal 3 gouramis, {gold, moonlight, blue 3 spots} 4 platy's, 6 neon tetras, 1 rope fish, apple snails, 1 XL leporad pleco { is it true they will eat fish when they are this big ? } 150-200 gal pond outside... 4,5 comets, 1 koi, 1 unknown goldfish type, 1 African albino black clawed frog, apple snails "whats left" and now I have purchased a 200 gallon tank that has not been set up yet... I am thinking of starting a small fish store and wanted some ideas on how to "organize" these fish I already have..?!?! I think I have done alright so far... but I hear all these horror storys of the gourmis eating attacking other fish.. also the mollys and platys.. So far I have had only 2 real problems and I believe 1 was the frog which is now out in the pond with the much larger fish... I havent lost many fish since we started with all these tanks.. but some one gave me 2 swordtails and I now believe they had a parasite { caused their bodies to bow or curve } they died with in 2 days... the 60 gal and 40 gal tank got infected, I lost a total of 5 fish not including the 2 that infected mine to begin with, I treated the infected tanks with sea salt.. not even 1/2 teaspoon per 5gal... since that treatment, which stayed in the 40 gal and the 60 gal 2 days I have lost only one, a molly that was already curved and very underweight... this was yesterday.. I am sure it is some sorta parasite, I do not like to add chemicals to the tanks, For most of the parasites I usually raise my temps to 80-85 slowly or do the adding of sea salt to the tanks.. and sometimes treat with melafix.... I know that it has cured ich and the shaking molly syndrome, also the gourmis rocking parasite many times ...but this time my treatments are not working .. it did however slow this parasite down... but it is still killing my poor fish.. also I am pretty sure that this parasite gave one of my pleco's brain damage... it was brought to me with the swordtails and it was crazy smashing into the tank and attacking other fish.. even jumping outa the water and hittting the hood lights.. SO if any one has any ideas on what this parisite may be.. or how to treat it with out harsh chemicals.. please let me know... or idea's on how to put the fish together.. or if they will all work in the tanks i already have them in.. can they co-exist as is ? THANKS YOU ALL FOR UR TIME ;)
Resolved Question: Are there any good larger (3"+) aquarium fish that will get along with non-aggressive community fish?
Howdy All! We have a 20 gallon tank that contains about five fish total: two black tetras, two pink tetras, and one black neon. We also have an outside container "pond" with guppies; I'll bring those in for the Winter, and scoop them back outside next Spring. My seven year old would like something fun and a little bigger to look at. I don't want a fish that will gobble everyone else though. :) Any good suggestions for a nice community fish with a little pizzazz but not a fishy appetite? Thanks so much! Thanks everyone! NoSoop4U (funny play on Seinfeld!) - I didn't get the painted/injected Pink Tetras, just plain. I know about the painting and stay away from that sort of thing. :) NoSoop - as another note my fish are 1+ years old and some quite a bit older than that, so I can't take any of them back. :) Though stabilizing to schools of three is definitely a good idea. I did, of course, have three of each to start but the other neons were smaller than the fellow still in the tank and I think they must have been rather tasty to the tetras as well as they disappeared after the first day. The bristlenose really sounds like he'd fit the bill for neat and unique. Copperhead, thanks for the awesome advice. I've been waiting four years for those darned tetras to go ahead and pass on to the great blue waters in the sky. You're right on the white tetras, I thought they were pink from their body color. We have a pretty Chinese house and cottage plus other plants. It's just kind of dull since the fish were all the same shape/color. Thanks again for your wonderful input. :)
Resolved Question: Guppies fish tank/ pond?
ive seen lots of people do it but how? they have a fish tank setup outside with some sunlight (not dierect) its extremly green but has TONS of guppies n it has some lilypads how do the fish survive with no oxygen etc? can i do this i want to breed guppies like that! and do u need to clean it? nothing goes with the tank just itself no filters heaters or any other thing
Resolved Question: any ever kept toad tadpoles?
well i have a 10 gallon thats set up with a little mini filter, heater,no gravel, and a huge plastic bushy plant from a craft store and i just got done raising my guppy fry in it and are now in of my 30 gallon community tanks. i only have now 6 ghost shrimp, a male betta(just in there for w/e i just added him today ) and like fry that were to small to add to the 30 gallon. we have a huge pond outside and i took like 20-25 tadpoles from toads and like 20 minutes later my ghost shrimp each had one in its little claws and was eating it. im thinking about lettin them out into the pond tomorrow but i figured i would just add that little thinbg on here. i thought it was interesting. thanks o and what do you feed them?
Resolved Question: How to get rid of my fish (guppies)?
OMG!!! My fish is reproducing like crazy!! I was wondering how should i sell my fish, i mean i have a big outside pond with koi in it and if i put it in there it will freeze or get eaten like i dont want to get rid of my plants or anything and dont want to harm the fish either So best way to get rid of the fish fast? Easy? Or make some $$$$???? Thankyou
Resolved Question: Goldfish in a tropical aquarium?
Can goldfish be kept in my 55g tropical tank along with guppies and mollies? Also, i have a pond outside so if after a few years in the tropical tank would it be possible to place it outside without killing it? my pond freezes over in winter aswell. Nah i was talking about the goldfish. So would the goldfish die or what? Lindsey C you're wrong. I have kept fish in that pond for the last 10 years. Every year it freezes over. Up to 6 inches thick. None of the fish died. I was asking if the change from tropical to coldwater would kill it. The fact that the pond freezes over was to place emphasis on how cold the pond can get, rather than you thinking it would be the same temperature as a coldwater tank.
Resolved Question: Can I use an algae-cide designed for ponds in my smaller tanks?
I have a pond outside and use "Tetra Pond Algae Control" in it, and the stuff works great. It worked so well, in fact, that I wondered if I could add any to my ten gallon tank. There isn't really an algae problem in the 10 gal, but I'm lazy and cleaning the tank walls annoys me. Slowing algae growth would be awesome. I'm just worried about possible negative effects. The ten gal has eight fish in it, six female bettas, one male betta, and one female guppy. They all live in harmony, and have beautiful fins. I also have two fully grown aponogeton plants in there and nine or ten sproutlings. The active ingredient in the chemical treatment is poly[Oxyethylene (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene Dichloride], and it's at 5.4%. If I use the right concentration in my ten gal, will that help control the algae? Or will it harm what's in the tank?
