Ok, im going to tell you how i set up my tank honestly. I need as much help as i can get. -I have a 4 year old 30g tank that i am now using for fish. (My mother gave it to me and i am not even really sure where it came from.. I never asked) -It was used originally before me, as a fish tank. I first used it as a cage for my chameleon. My chameleon died because of worms that the owners never treated as supposed to after taking it out of the wild.. After that i used it for my 2 iguanas which now are in a 50g untill they outgrow it. Now im using the 30g for a fish tank. -The tank was dirty so i washed it outside with dish soap the best i could. -After that i set up the tank in my room away from any major sunlit areas. -I ran the hose from outside into my room and filled the empty tank about 80% -I added a chemical that kills chlorine and stuff which makes the water safe for fish. -I left it overnight. -The next morning, I went to walmart and bought a bubble stone strip (I already had the pump) and a water filter which was for 10-20 gallon tanks.. I didnt have the money and didnt think the 10g difference was that horrific. -I went to pets mart, and bought 3 tiger barbs, and 1 dwarf gourami. I also bought tropical fish flakes, and a 25lb of black aquarium gravel. -I went home and set up my water filter and it up and going. -Then i poured in my black gravel. I didnt wash it before putting it in because the guy at the store told me all fish products are safe and it wasnt needed. -I placed my plastic plants in the tank where i wanted them. (my mom gave them to me and said they were from her old fish tank. I soaked them in hot water over night and rinsed them well the next morning) -After that i let my bagged fish sit in the tank for about 20 minutes.. i dont know why, but the guy at the store told me to. -I fished them out with my hands and placed them in the tank. -My fish seemed fine for the first few hours, then after that the tiger barbs picked a spot in the tank and didnt move around much. The gourami was swimming around and eating his food. -Later on that day my little brother put 2 orange tetras i think it was, from his tank to ours. They seemed to cause problems so we netted them out. -The next morning i woke up and turned on their lights. They were all alive, but the barbs were not moving from their spots.. -Later on that day one of the tiger barbs was swimming at the top of the tank.. Then he started swimming side ways. Then he was floating around the tank without control of him/herself. about 20 minutes later he died. -We read online that the likable cause was the ammonia level in the water. We ran to walmart to buy a ammonia testing kit and ammonia tabs that were supposed to get rid of it. -We ran home and tested the water as directed. It said there was little to no ammonia in the water and what was in the water was safe. I dont know what i'm doing, or what i have done wrong. But a little advice would help because i plan on having many more fish to come. It would be nice if they wouldnt die on me.. :( My gourami chases my other fish! And how would i add salt at this time? I have 3 fish in the tank. During the next water change would i add the amount of salt needed into the fresh water before pouring it in to the tank? It was said that i need to do 25% water changes at first? One more quick segment! What do i do now that i have used dish soap? I'm not trying to sound harsh but to i just wait for my fish to die and start over? I'm I have a 10-20g filter, could i buy another one and have 2 filters? Do i let my water set now and leave the tank how it is? Also will putting my hands in my tank add alot of bacteria even though i have washed my hands? I would like to add more things to the tank later on!

Something strange has happened to my tank, literally, over night. For weeks and weeks my tanks has been A-OK, I've been watching and checking it and vacuuming/cleaning regularly, watching feedings and nitrate levels, everything by the book. This morning I woke up and my tank is a complete 180 from yesterday - There is this weird, bright neon turquoise / teal splotchy film coating the glass, some of the rocks and the decor in the tank. 3 of my fish were dead, a 4th on it's last leg, it'll probably be dead in the hour, and my plants shed about half their leaves, and the rest that were still in tact to the stalk were basically sludge, and my filter that I had just recently changed was completely overtaken with muck. It has a growth pattern that looks like mold, not a typical algae pattern. It is not cyanobacteria, I've had that plenty times in my tank and it looks completely different - it is a, literal, NEON coloured turquoise, it looks like I painted the tank with some kind of glow-in-the-dark rave paint. And the water itself is still crystal clear - it's only on the surfaces of objects and the glass. Everything was completely fine last night when I check the tank before bed, and this is how it was when I woke this morning to check it again.........I've searched, and searched and searched, I can not find ANY info on turquoise algae or fungus in aquariums, and other people have told me it's Blue-Green algae......but it is not, they have not seen it, I am familiar with that - it is absolutely not Cyna. I have never seen anything like this before. What is it?? What do I do ?? Can I clean it, or do I need to chunk the entire tank, clean, and start over from scratch? Is this some type of fungus or disease I need to eradicate or can I simply medicate/clean and continue on?? I am totally lost here. It was a 10 gal tetra tank with a an orange glow fish, 3 serpae tetras, and 3 black neons. 2 of the black neons died, and one of the Serpaes. The last black neon is the one that's about to die any second. The other Serpaes look a bit pale, and not as active, but otherwise relatively ok. The glow fish is acting completely normal, happy and healthy.

I'm a beginner, and after doing hours (quite possibly over 24 hours total LOL) of research, I thin I'm ready to start up my freshwater aquarium. Also, I have a 25 gallon aquarium. First off-- Can/should I put my plants in before I put my fish in, or do I need the fish to supply the proper nutrients to the plants? If I DO put the plants in first, will that speed up the nitrogen cycle and make my tank healthier? Second off-- What should be my starter fish? I'm going to build up slowly and just get a school of either Cherry Barbs (preferably, but I'm not sure if they're a very good beginner fish... some sources say they are, others not.) Harlequin Rasbora, Zebra Danios (rather not get these, but they seem to be the best choice) I also want a bunch of cory cats but I'm not too sure if they should be what I start out with. What kind of filter should I get? Apparently undergravel filters are the worst, and bio-wheel filters are the "best." Does it really matter? What are some good invertebrates to be added to my aquarium that won't consume plant life? I'm leaning towards Glass Shrimp and maybe Amano Shrimp when my tank is more mature and there's more algae around. Possibly some nerites as well-- I'd like a few apple snails but I don't want them eating my plants! Also... Seeing as Glass shrimp and Cory cats are both bottom feeders/scavengers/whatever, would it be okay to have a school of cory cats (probably 5-7) as well as a few Glass shrimp or would there not be enough food for them? (Though, I suppose I'll still be feeding them daily...) Alright, sorry for all the questions, lol. Okay I'm want to start a saltwater aquarium, and now that I've mastered the art of freshwater fish keeping I figure I might as well do it now. I have a 125 gal fresh tank and a 55 gal and 35 gal that are both empty (upgrades, upgrades haha) So before I even buy the live rock or sand I'm making sure I've done all the research humanly possible... I've figured out that I can use the 55 as the main tank and the 30 as a refugium( I finally got my head wrapped around hat concept)... But the sump still blows my mind... What does it do? Why do I need it? DO I need it? How do I install it? How do I keep it up? Any and all answers(that are civil) will be immensely appreciated. P.S. I know the refugium is a great place for copepods to culture, but how do you know that some will get sucked into the main tank?

Alright, I went out and bought a 50 gallon plexi glass tank. This is my first aquarium. I just need an idea on what type of fish I should put in and what not. I will be using my tap water and then dechlorinating it. Are there any other chemicals I should add to my water besides the dechlorinator? Also, what temperature should I keep my freshwater fish at? Hello,everyone i am in need of some assistance.You see,i have this dream of building or making an aquarium ecosystem.This dream became reality when i bought my 750 gallon aquarium.It cost me a fortune,but i'm happy with my decision.I need someone to give me an idea on what fish and crustaceans i should add to my tank.i already have some ideas for plants and the design of the tank.I would like my tank to resemble a coral reef,or at least one of the rift lakes in Africa.Mind you,i do not want any rift lake fishes,because i have owned many of them in the past.I want something new,in other words,can someone suggest some new and quick growing freshwater fish species which can live in soft acidic to mildly hard water.I would like the 'largest' fish to attain a maximum length of 5 inches.I also need help setting up a 'food web'.This idea may sound a bit crazy,but it's been my dream for nearly a decade now.I already have a variety of plants and the tank is cycled,so i've already taken care of the producer problem.I need the fishes and crustaceans that will be higher in the trophic level.For example after the producers i will have the 'wild' variety of guppy and a few small tetras.I will need a fish that can prey on this fish.My 'wild guppies grow to a maximum length of 3 cm.I live in a tropical climate so the heating won't be a problem. Hey guys, i currently have a 35 gallon freshwater tank with goldfish. Im thinking about selling the goldfish and turning my tank into a tropical aquarium. I want a tropical tank so i can keep more fish, to make the most of my tank but i am not sure yet. My questions are: Is there more of a workload keeping tropical fish than goldfish? e.g water changes Is there any extra stuff i need for a tropical tank? NOTE: I already have a heater. I have no idea how many fish i can keep and what combinations to keep. So please, if you have suggestions please tell me. I have been doing a little research about tropical fish and im thinking of getting the following: 4 platys 6 Neon tetras 6 Rummy nose 5 cherry barbs 2 Blue gouramis or 2 Convict Cichlids (im not sure if they cichlids will work with the other fish) What do you reckon? 2 hours ago - 4 days left to answer. I dont think we have dwarf gouramis available in my area, any other alternatives? i want two center peice fish. 44 minutes ago Also with all these fish, could i get away with doing 25% water change once a week?

Okay, I would love to get a fish tank for my room. I have been looking around and i would like a 20-30 gallon fish tank. I have only had one tank before and it was 2 gallons with some little tetras in it and that was when i was 12 years old. I need to know what i need to know. I want freshwater fish, and i need to know what filter i would need for a tank this size that wouldn't require me to clean it that often. I understand it must be cleaned and i will tank that responsiblity but i do not want to be doing it every week. Need to know: great fish to have? filter? heater? gravel (does it matter color and size?)? chemicals?(anything that needs to go in the water) please im a beginner and i would like your opinion on a great aquarium set up! *I WANT CRYSTAL CLEAR WATER WITH A LIGHT THAT MAKES IT POP!!!!!* Thanks. try not to go too expensive as well... color of gravel does not matter then correct? it would not bother any fish?
