Resolved Question: Why are my fish dying?
Okay, so I got a new 10-gallon tank, a filter and a heater about two months ago. I filled it with de-chlorinated water (using tap water and commercial de-chlorinator) then added several cups of water from a pre-existing tank. I waited several days, then had my water tested. The pet store people said it looked good. So, I bought three glofish (the really brightly colored Danios) two harlequin rasboras, two Corydoras Catfish, and one snail, along with several fake plants and a decoration for them to hide inside. I added the fish. For the first week or so, everything seemed fine. The fish were lively, the water temperature was about 80 degrees, I fed them flake food, but ensured that only enough went to the bottom of the tank to feed my catfish, and I did a partial water on the week mark (using, again, dechlorinated water). My water testing showed almost perfect conditions, as far as nitrate, nitrite, and ammonia goes. It's soft, and the ph is a little high, but I was told that was normal, and shouldn't be an issue. Anyway, a little more than one week in, one of my glofish started acting crazy. It would swim upside down, then right itself, and swim under the rocks at the bottom of the tank. I assumed it had swim bladder disease, and fed the fish a couple shelled, defrosted peas. However, it died the next day. A few more days passed, then one of my glofish was showing the symptoms of gill flukes. I added freshwater aquarium salt in a yogurt container with holes in it, as the pet store person had suggested, removed my snail to another dechlorinated dish of water, and treated my aquarium with Lifeguard, an all-around tablet treatment. I removed my carbon filter for this process, (it takes the medicine out of the water) and followed the directions given on the medication, and on the day after the medication was through with, I did a partial water change, then put my carbon filter and snail back in. My glofish died one day into treatment. Then, a few days later, one of my rasboras was doing the same thing my first glofish was doing- swimming upside-down and under rocks, then directly under the surface of the water. I figured maybe the oxygen level in my tank was low, so I did another partial water change, and aerated the water. He died in the night. I keep doing water testing, but I don't see anything abnormal, and I tried to buy hardy fish to begin with, but I feel like I'm having an abnormal number of deaths... Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks a bunch... Hmm... My fish are in a room with windows, but all of them have blinds pulled down. The main source of light they have is their tank lights. Could too little light be the problem?
Resolved Question: Open To Suggestions For Aquarium?
So do you think I could have a powder blue dwarf gourami, an electric yellow cichlid, and snail as tankmates for my parrot cichlid? As much as I like Oscars, I heard they get too aggressive. Could I get a freshwater goby? Thanks. So if I add the snail, corydoras, or anything else you suggested, could I have mollies, or not?
Resolved Question: aquarium snails dying?
I have a freshwater aquarium with guppies, molly, pleco, algae eater, otto cat, figure 8 puffer, angel fish, shrimp and neon tetras. My two snails died, but all of the fish are doing great and the tank is cycled. I do keep a small amount (smaller than 1 tbsp/5 gallons) of pure salt in the tank. I had a small brown algae diatoms outbreak at the end of the cycling of the tank. What killed these so called "hardy" snails? What are the requirements for snails to thrive in an aquarium?
Resolved Question: Could I get some more cory cats for my freshwater aquarium?
I have a 29 gallon aquarium. I currently have: 5 neon tetras 5 longfinned white skirt tetras 2 dwarf gouramis 3 cory cats 3 mystery snails I was thinking about getting 2-3 more cory cats but I wanted some advice first. :) Thanks a bunch!
Resolved Question: What are good freshwater shrimp for a 10 gallon aquarium?
I have a 10 gallon with a filter, heater, plants, ect. I plan on getting 6 cardinal Tetra, 2 Snails, and 2 Shrimp. At first I wanted ghost shrimp but now i think I might want something more pretty. What are some more kinds of Freshwater shrimp that would do good in this tank?
Resolved Question: I Have A Few Aquarium Questions?
I have a few aquarium questions: I want a Freshwater aquarium, currently I'm have been doing the fish less cycle with food for about a month. I haven't done any water changes or changed the filter cartridge. About 1/4 of the water has evaporated. Heres what came up on the tests: nitrate: 0 ppm nitrite: 0 ppm hardness: 75 ppm alkalinity: 80 ppm ph: 6.8 1) are my nitrates, nitrite, hardness, alkalinity, and ph about right and if not how could I fix them? 2) can you tell if my ammonia levels are right from the other test or should I take some water and see if they can test it at Petsmart? 3) Should I have done any water changes or changed the filter cartidge? I heard when doing the cycle your not suppose to do any changes until the fish are in. 4) I noticed that my temperature changes a lot but stays in the 70 range is this normal or bad? 5) How should I add some water back, if I use a water conditioner won't it mess it up. 6) I been putting some plant fertilizer is it speeding up the cycle or slowing it down? 7) Am I prepared for fish? I only have plants and snails and my tank looks boring.
Resolved Question: what are these little black bugs in my aquarium?
note: sorry i dont have much knowledge about what any of the equipment is called, i'll do my best to explain stuff.) hi ppl, i have a little cold freshwater tank in my conservatory and yesterday i did a water change, i decided to clean the spongey thing at the back (only rinsed it in cold water) and i saw movement, i looked at the water and caught some of these critters with a pipette and put them in a glass, they kind of look like tiny round beads, they're hard to see unless you look real hard, they remind me of beetles or ladybirds, only they are black/see through. i cant see any legs, antennae or mouth parts, and i've heard of something similar before that are just a clean up crew, but i just thought i'd ask on here in case they are parasitic or harmful. they could have come off a plant i bought a few months back (but they arent in the tank, just the filter at the back) or maybe from outside, i have another tank outside that i used to breed snails, my fish like eating them on occasion and my uncle feeds them to his puffer. thanks in advance for your help =]
Resolved Question: Getting a fish tank...help?
I posted earlier with no responses. I hope this post isn't too long. Anyways, I may be fostering dogs soon. My parents say that they want to see if I'm able to handle the responsibility before I actually get one, so it was my idea to foster (: If a dog doesn't work out, though, then I'm going to be sticking with fish. Right now I only have a small 2.5gallon with a Mystery Snail, two male guppies, and a little tiny sucker fish. So, in the asumption that a dog doesn't work, I need to know roughly what all I'm going to need to keep an aquarium (freshwater) and how much it's all going to cost me. Yes, before you all lecture me, I'm an experianced aquarium owner. We had one when I was a few years younger, before my parents divource. I remember always watching my mom changing the water, changing the filter, etc., and I would help. Any -tips- on how to run one would be helpful. Like, how long does it need to cycle first? I have about $400 that I can spend, so I need to know what size tank I can/should get&what supplies, while still staying within my budget. (That includes fish, too). I'll probably shop at Petsmart for supplies, since they're cheaper there and have pretty much the same items. Thank you so much (:

Resolved Question: Can Malaysian Trumpet Snails live in freshwater?
A friend of mine recommended for me to get trumpet snails for my aquarium, though he didn't explain if freshwater is safe for them. I found a couple of sellers on ebay, and one who sells 200 snails but states that their only for salt water, while other sellers state that they're for fresh water aquariums. So what's the deal? I have live plants and barely 2 plecos in my aquarium to help with the algae. I use to have a 10 year old pleco that grew to be like almost 15 inches long b4 he died, so I know the plecos will be fine. The substrate is sand. How many snails would be sufficient for a 100 gallon tank? go to ebay really quickly, type in malaysian trumpet snails and click on the first bid for 200 snails, he clearly states salt water http://cgi.ebay.com/200-Live-Malaysian-Trumpet-snails-50-Nassarius-snails-/290460715801?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0
