Resolved Question: help with cycling a new tank?
ok so i've just bought a 100 gallon tank, as i'd like to house 2 tiger oscars. i've done all my research on them and what they need to stay happy and healthy. and im quite confident that i know what im doing. im just confused on how to get my tank up and running and safe to be able to put fish in. i haven't set the tank up yet as im waiting on my new external filter to arrive. i've been on a couple of sites, about fish-less cycles and some people say that there is a quicker more effective way of doing it by adding solutions such as bio-spira, sea chem, stability etc i personally would like to go the quicker route as im very impatient and cant wait to get my 2 oscars. lol but i want to do it the right way. so can anybody tell me the best way to cycle my tank?
i have a 4 ft tank with tropical fish in such as angels, elephant noses, gourami's etc and i don't remember cycling the tank before hand and haven't lost a fish in the 2 years of having it!
any help would be great thanks =D x
Resolved Question: feeding my oscars and other fish?
i have 1 8 inch oscar and a bunch of other semi agressive fish like tiger barbs, ghost knife, three silver dollar fish, and cory cats. can the semi gressive fish eat the cichlid pellets and can the oscar eat the normal tropical fish flakes and pellets? could i just feed one type of food?
Resolved Question: how much blood worms do i feed my 5cm oscar?
i heard that you can buy frozen blood worms form any pet store and was wondering.. how much of these worms to feed to my 5cm red tiger oscar (he is eating tropical fish granules atm (3 times a day)
Resolved Question: Looking For Non-community Fish To Have In My Tropical Tank?
I have got a 90 litre tropical tank which is 24, 12, 16 inches ( i think thats how many litres it is) but Instead of buying community fish i would like to try something different. i would only like a couple of speices but i would like them to be fairly big. Maybe some decent sized fish, like maybe 15cm max or so but also wanted maybe like a little invert like a lobster or maybee some craps. also i didnt really want to keep any plants either. I know theres lots of fishes out there but i want to find some i really like =]
I was going to try tiger oscars but i research and realised that my tank isnt big enough for them
If you have any suggestions i would really like to here them.
Thanks =]
Resolved Question: Fish for my 40 gallon tank?
I recently got a 40 gallon tank. I'm going with freshwater tropical and i want to ad some more fish to my tank. I already have an albino tiger oscar, an electric yellow lab, an electric blue hap, and a chineese alge eater. I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to add both a red tailed shark and a jack dempsey? any answers would be great. Thank you.
the yellow and blue are both 2.5" and the oscar is 3", I've only had them for like a week and i checked a lot of pages for the water requirements I've read nothing about yellow labidochromis needing brackish water and all of the fish seem to line up.
Resolved Question: should i get a 450 litre aquarium or a tropical pond?
i have experience in fish keeping and have been keeping fish for 5 years..the reason for this dilema is that i really like red taill catfish and have read that in order to give them a good life they need a tropical pond. however i won't be able to see them very well. also i love tiger oscars and i just can't see them in a tropical pond..and a RTC won't fit in an aquarium..what to do?the pond will be around 800-1000 gallons
Resolved Question: what kind of tropical fish can i put into my tank and not upset my other fish?
Hi!
I have a 60 gallon freshwater tank which already has some tropical fish in it:
2 gouramis (male and female)
6 tiger barbs
1 rainbow shark
2 red parrot cichlids
1 black ghost (7 inches)
1 plecostomus (7 inches)
1 loach
and
1 peacock eel
so i was wondering, would it be okay to put in an Oscar, or some frontosa (humphead) cichlids, maybe even some angelfish?
any colorful type of fish would be great.
Resolved Question: Cloudy water in my Oscar tank.?
I have two small Oscars (2.5) inches in length in my 55 gallon tank. Yes I know this will not be sufficient for them when they are grown, and I will buy a new tank for them. I initially planned on keeping a tropical community at first and decided against it when all of them died in the new tank within 2 days. I got the Oscars now and I love them and do not want to get rid of them.
After much research, I plan to get a new tank when they grow larger and keep the smaller 55 gallon for a community tank. I have become addicted to my fish already! My Albino got ich its first week and my Tiger was fine. I treated with salt and heat and a mild protozoan treatment, he was perfect within 48 hours. Now my tank is ridiculously cloudy.
I put the filters back in after doing a 25% water change after the treatment to clean out the tank. I know they are messy fish! I tried to clear the water with a water clarifier, I did two treatments in 2 days, and all I see is some of the clumped together dirt particles, but the water is still cloudy. I added another dual filter yesterday, so now I have two back of the tank bio-filters running, with a total of 4 filter cartridges. Water is still cloudy. Tested PH, and it was 7.0. I tested for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite and its fine.
1.Is my water cloudy from the ich treatment?
2.Is it cloudy because it is still a new tank? (3 weeks in, cycled with live bacteria (not stresszyme, I go to a specialty store for cichlids and other exotic fish, they gave a treatment they use in their tanks, basically live bacteria from older tanks) from an aquarium store, put directly on filters, so the tank may already be well cycled using this method)
3.How long will it take for my tank to clear up with this new, extra filtration system put in?
4.Do I need to do another water change and vacuum the gravel? The fish seem fine, its just cloudy water!
5. I have two zebra danios in there still, my Oscars cant seem to catch them, but they had no problem killing a couple minnows, lol.
Any info would be great... How long before I change out these filters on a new tank and if I rinse them, how do I do that? In the sink? Im a little new to that part.
My two filters run 630 GPH, is that not good enough?
I added about the Danios just to let you know of anything else in the tank. My Oscars basically leave them alone because they are too fast. I would take em out, but wat would I do with em? I cant give em away, so its either let them eat them or flush em. I figure I will just see what happens, since they have lived together for weeks.
The tank is new and the method of ich treatment I stated above, so if I have to do another change, I will. Didnt know if I should do it so often in a new tank. It was cloudy the first week and went away, up until I treated them.
Oh one more thing, no I did not remove the entire filter, sorry it came across that way. I only removed the carbon filter cartridges while I did the ich treatment. I left it running other wise! :)
Resolved Question: Tiger Oscar and Green Terror compatible?
Hi, I currently have a single Tiger Oscar in my 55 gallon tank. He is about 3.5 inches right now and I was wondering if it is okay for to house him with a Green Terror?
The Green Terror that I saw at my Local Fish Store is about the same size as he is and I am pretty sure they'll have their little scuffle but I was hoping it would subside and both would learn to live and share space.
So do you guys think it is okay for me to have both of them together or is my tank way too small for that to happen?
I would also like to ask about my Oscar's diet. I want to feed him with the best nutritional value possible. I right now feed him 2 times a day with about a 12 hour gap in between feeding times. I sometimes drop a few freeze-dried bloodworms once a day for a small snack.
The food in which I feed him are:
Hikari Cichlid Gold (Main diet)
Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellet (I break it up and feed him a couple of pellets a day)
Hikari Mega Tropical Frozen Treats (I feed this to him once every other day)
Freeze Dried Bloodworms (Small snack during the noontime)
Tetramin Tropical Flakes (I feed this to him only once in a while)
I also plan to feed him some small cut up market shrimp soon. Maybe give it to him once or twice a week.
Any help or input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Resolved Question: Can a tiger oscar become constipated?
My tiger oscar I have had since last week has been on a diet of hand fed blood worms out of a flat pack, and tropical fish flakes. when I got home from work I fed all my fish fishy flakes, when I came back in the room I noticed two of my tiger barbs where chasing the poor little guy and noticed something kind of darkish and stringy hanging from the bottow of his two center fins, I cant figure out what it is its about half an inch long. The Oscar is only 2" any thought, I hope my crayfish didnt stick him in the gut!
Good to hear this is normal, the other fish where trying to eat it, kinda sick if you ask me, anything I should feed him to keep that from happening or its no harm with just blood worms and flakes.
Its in a 75 gallon which measure 4ft side to side and and 18" front to back, It is planted, gravel bed, and a piece of driftwood as well as a few peieces of sleight. ther are 11 juvenile barbs , 5 of them are tiger, 4 are albino tiger, 2 rose barbs, and 2 silver ones, 3 zebra danios, 2 catfish, and a blue crayfish, 21 fish total, the oscar has the most personality.
